SPPS Prepares Families and Staff for Potential Strike
Dear Saint Paul Public Schools Community,
On Feb. 15, members of the Saint Paul Federation of Educators (SPFE) union voted to authorize a strike. Today, SPFE filed their intent to strike with the Bureau of Mediation Services, a requirement before a strike can occur. The bargaining groups represented by SPFE include licensed staff such as teachers, educational assistants, and school and community service professionals.
This action does not mean a strike will happen immediately. A 10-day period will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in order for negotiations to continue. SPFE has stated that a strike could begin no sooner than Monday, March 11. Both parties can and will continue to meet during this time with the intention of reaching a settlement and avoiding a strike.
If a strike occurs:
- All PreK-12 classes will be canceled at all schools
- All students are encouraged to take their iPads home
- All Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) and Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes will be canceled
- Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) classes and services in the community will be canceled
- Discovery Club will be impacted
- All SPPS after-school activities and clubs will be canceled
- All youth and adult Community Education classes will be canceled
- Varsity athletics will continue on a case-by-case basis.
- All middle school sports, high school JV and C quads and practices will be postponed
- Free breakfast and lunch will be available for students to pick up on a daily basis
- The school year could be extended to make up for lost instructional time
- High school students might face challenges obtaining credits needed for graduation
- Summer Learning Programs may need to be rescheduled to a later date
- The ACT scheduled for high schools on March 12 could be postponed
- Notification of 2024-25 school enrollment status for families may be delayed
- Permitted community events and/or meetings will not be impacted
Please note: SPPS is exploring options to minimize the impact of a strike on families. More information on childcare, meals and transportation will be provided at a later date if necessary.
All of the latest information is available on our website at spps.org/negotiations. The bargaining teams for SPPS and SPFE will meet again with the state mediator on Friday, March 1. We will continue to keep you informed as negotiations continue.
